Job: Scrum Master
What does a Scrum Master do at Rabobank?
As a Scrum Master, I focus on process optimization, solving impediments and facilitating sessions so that my IT squads (teams) can move forward effectively in their daily work. Within Rabobank, we work with Agile Scrum and a scaled Scrum framework specifically customized for Rabobank to support collaboration across multiple teams and (tech) domains.
Here’s what a day in Kang’s life looks like at the office!
6-8 AM:
My day starts at 5:30 AM in Veghel. By 6:10, I’m on the road for a 55-minute drive to Croeselaan, Utrecht. Depending on traffic (and Spotify mood), I arrive between 7:15 and 8:00 AM. This commute is my quiet time, no meetings, no emails, just me and the road.
8-9 AM:
Once I arrive, I set up my workstation and grab my essential four cups of coffee. Yes, four. I like mornings, but I start slow, like a diesel engine warming up. While drinking, I check emails, open all relevant tools, dashboards, and PowerPoints for the day. I prep my work a week ahead, this creates more time to inspect my workload and make changes during my week in time.
9-12 PM:
From 9 AM, the real action begins. My calendar fills with a mix of calls, coaching sessions, and Scrum events. There are always at least two daily stand-ups due to the 2 squads that I support and often other events like: refinements, planning, reviews, retrospectives, or 1:1 coaching. If I get a break, I use it to document notes from all my meetings and conversations, because good documentation creates strong clarity for my own next steps, continuity for my teams and better prioritization overall. Occasionally, I get pulled into spontaneous brainstorms or support sessions. For a Scrum Master, flexibility is key.
12-1 PM:
Lunch is a chance to recharge and connect. I usually eat at Rabobank’s dining hall, but if I have a longer break, I head into the city with colleagues. I steer conversations away from work and towards personal stories, because trust and connection are built over shared meals and laughter.
1-4 PM:
Afternoons mirror the morning: more meetings, more coaching, more facilitation. I switch between my six Scrum Master stances: Teacher, Coach, Mentor, Facilitator, Impediment Remover, and Change Agent, depending on what the squad needs. Every day is different, but the rhythm stays consistent.
4-5 PM:
Around 4 PM, I head home to beat the traffic. This is my decompression time, Spotify on, laptop closed. It’s a mental reset before the evening wrap-up.
5-6 PM:
Back home, I check emails and chats one last time. I update my to-do list and make sure everything is planned for the next day. Only when things are in order can I truly relax.
How I Unwind
I unwind when I know I’m on track. Cooking dinner, chatting with loved ones, and reflecting on the day helps. Then it’s time for kickboxing or a 5km walk, or a gym session, whatever keeps the energy flowing.
Why I Love My Job (and Rabobank)
