Name: Yaika
Job: AWS Cloud Engineer
What does an AWS Cloud Engineer do at Sogeti?
As an AWS Cloud Engineer, I ensure that the infrastructure components supporting applications are properly provisioned, secure, and reliable. I use Terraform to define and deploy infrastructure as code, continuously monitor its performance, and implement configuration changes when necessary to maintain optimal operation and security. Currently, I work in a project for PostNL.
Here’s what a day in Yaika's life looks like!
8:30-9 AM:
I arrive at the office and start by organizing my priorities for the day. I check my emails and look for any updates on open tickets, just making sure nothing urgent popped up overnight.
9-9:30 AM:
We kick off with our daily standup to share progress and see if anyone needs a hand. Most of the team works from home, so it’s a virtual meeting and no, we don’t actually stand up.
9:30-11.30 AM:
I dive into a task to build out some new infrastructure. Our team architect shared a design, and I’m translating it into Terraform code. Today’s setup includes a Windows server, a load balancer, and a MySQL database.
11:30-12 PM:
I join a weekly meeting with the PostNL team to go over updates and discuss any open points for one of the applications I’ve been working on.
12-1 PM:
Lunchtime! I grab a bite with some colleagues in the cafeteria. After lunch, we usually take a short walk outside and have some fun conversations to recharge before the afternoon.
1-3 PM:
I’m working on a task to resolve some security vulnerabilities, closing ports that shouldn’t be open and checking that servers are running the latest software versions.
3-4 PM:
A colleague reached out because one of the certificate pipelines isn’t working. We jump on a call to troubleshoot together. Sometimes four eyes really do see more than two.
4-4:30 PM:
I have a quick update meeting with one of the senior engineers to discuss the progress on the infrastructure task from this morning. I also ask a few questions about parts I got stuck on. She’s always super helpful.
4:30-5:30 PM:
I continue working on the project, doing some research for the next step: setting up SSO integration with AWS Cognito. It’s a cool challenge. Once I wrap up, I close my laptop and cycle home.
How do you unwind at the end of the day?
I work from the office pretty much every day. So I end my workday cycling back home which helps me unwind and creates a clear separation between work and private life.
What do you love about your job and your employer?
I like the nice, kind people working at Sogeti. And there are lots of learning opportunities
